“Every storm runs outta rain”
The Atlanta rapper captioned a photo of him and wife Tameka “Tiny” Harris on Instagram. TI is presumably referring to the announcement that the Los Angeles District Attorney’s office will not be moving forward with sexual abuse charges against the couple.
However, the case is not being declined on the merits, but instead because of expired statute of limitations. Prosecutors for the DA’s office stated “Without the strengths and weaknesses of the evidence being evaluated, the case is declined due to expiration the Statute of Limitations.” The victim, listed as Jane Doe in court documents, claims that TI and Tiny drugged and sexually assaulted her in 2005, which means that the statute of limitations would have expired in 2015. In California, the statute of limitations for both civil and criminal sexual assault cases is 10 years.
Tyrone Blackburn, the attorney who represents at least 10 victims, contends that the allegations “span over fifteen years” and are “eerily consistent”. At the time that Blackburn called for an investigation into the couple back in March, more than 30 women had accused TI and Tiny of several crimes including sexual assault, rape, drugging and kidnapping.
Do you think it’s fair that there is a statute of limitations on things as serious as sexual assault?
