PROTECTING HIS BRAND: Clint Eastwood Sues CBD Retailers for Using his Name, Likeness

The Good, the Bad, and the Litigious.

Academy Award-winning actor, producer, and director Clint Eastwood filed two lawsuits in Los Angeles federal court on Wednesday against CBD manufacturers, marketers, and online retailers for falsely claiming that he endorsed their products.

The ninety-year-old Hollywood legend seeks millions of dollars in damages and a court order that the companies be forced to give up their profits.

The first lawsuit targets three CBD companies, Sera Labs, Greendios, and For Our Vets, who used Eastwood’s name and likeness for fake online news articles. One article quotes a fake interview that Eastwood gave in which he states that his new role selling CBD offered him “something bigger than movies.”

Representatives from Sera Labs claimed that they hired a marketing firm for the ad campaign and shut down the ads when they saw the firm was using Eastwood’s name and likeness.

In the second lawsuit, Eastwood sued 10 companies and individuals he claims used programming code to insert his name into online search results for CBD. He claimed that by using his name in hidden metatags, the defendants figuratively posted a sign with Mr. Eastwood’s likeness in front of their online stores and tricked the public into believing he is associated with CBD products.

Eastwood has previously sued to protect his name and image, including winning a jury trial against the National Enquirer and settling with a furniture maker who sold ottomans and chairs named “Clint” and “Eastwood.”

Do you think Clint will notch another legal victory?
