While the movie adaptation mostly focused on Lacks&#8217; daughter Deborah, this suit is all about getting justice for Henrietta and holding a\u00a0\u201ca racially unjust medical system&#8221; accountable.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/askcarterlaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/The_Immortal_Life_of_Henrietta_Lacks_film.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4734\" src=\"http:\/\/askcarterlaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/The_Immortal_Life_of_Henrietta_Lacks_film-202x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"202\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/askcarterlaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/The_Immortal_Life_of_Henrietta_Lacks_film-202x300.jpeg 202w, https:\/\/askcarterlaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/The_Immortal_Life_of_Henrietta_Lacks_film.jpeg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 202px) 100vw, 202px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Cells known as HeLa cells (named after the first two letters of Lacks&#8217; first and last name) were taken from Lacks&#8217; body without her consent or knowledge. Henrietta&#8217;s cells amazed doctors, being that they were able to double and stay alive in conditions outside the body that other cells would have died in.<\/p>\n<p>These cells were later mass produced, and used to study various effects on the growth of cancer cells without actually experimenting on humans.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Lacks&#8217; estate is asking the court to order the bio-company to &#8220;disgorge the full amount of its net profits obtained by commercializing the HeLa cell line to the Estate of Henrietta Lacks.&#8221; Her Estate is also seeking a permanent injunction to stop Thermo Fisher from using the cells without the Estate&#8217;s permission.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/askcarterlaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/download.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4735\" src=\"http:\/\/askcarterlaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/download.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/askcarterlaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/download.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/askcarterlaw.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/download-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Better late than never.
