DEPARTED. Will Smith’s Emancipation Becomes The First Movie To Exit Georgia Over Voting Laws

Departed. Will Smith’s movie Emancipation is the first movie to withdraw production from Georgia over the states restrictive election laws.

Will Smith released a statement withdrawing the production of the movie from Georgia. “The new Georgia voting laws are reminiscent of voting impediments that were passed at the end of Reconstruction to prevent many Americans from voting. Regrettably, we feel compelled to move our film production work from Georgia to another state.” The movie follows a fugitive from slavery on a brutal journey north from Louisiana.

Georgia’s new voting law limits absentee ballots and early voting. It restricts ballot drop boxes and imposes strict voter identification requirements.
